Signs Your Car Needs an Oil Change
Changing your car's oil regularly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your vehicle’s performance and extend the life of its engine.
The most reliable way to determine the recommended oil change interval is to consult your Owner’s Manual. However, there are also clear warning signs that may indicate your vehicle needs an oil change sooner. Below are the most common signs to watch for.
Why is it important to change your vehicle’s oil?
Engine oil is essential for proper engine performance. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and helps prevent overheating. But over time and with regular use, oil becomes contaminated with engine debris and environmental particles. As a result, it loses its ability to properly protect internal components, which can lead to increased wear, costly repairs, or even irreversible engine damage. Routine oil changes are key to maintaining long-term engine health.
How do you know when your vehicle needs an oil change?
These are the most common signs that it may be time for an oil change:
-
Dark and dirty oil
New oil has a clear amber color. If you check it and notice that it appears dark and/or contains visible particles, it may be saturated with contaminants and should be replaced.
-
Engine knocking or unusual noises
Old or degraded oil does not lubricate properly, which can cause metal-to-metal contact and lead to unusual engine noises.
-
Dark exhaust smoke
Visible dark or thicker-than-normal exhaust smoke may indicate that the oil is contaminated or deteriorating.
-
Burning oil smell inside the vehicle
If you notice a burning oil smell inside the cabin, it could indicate a leak or the engine overheating.
-
Engine overheating
Oil helps regulate engine temperature. If your vehicle is running hotter than usual, the oil may no longer be performing effectively.
-
Oil change or check engine light turns on
This is the most obvious sign. If your oil change indicator or check engine light comes on, it should be addressed as soon as possible.
Paying attention to these warning signs and regularly checking your oil level and condition can help protect your engine and prevent expensive repairs. If you notice any of these symptoms, do not ignore them.
How often should you change your oil?
The recommended interval depends on your vehicle model and the type of oil used. In general, an oil change is recommended every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometers (3,000 to 5,000 miles) or every six months, whichever comes first. For the exact interval for your Honda model, consult your Owner’s Manual.
How should you check your oil level?
If you suspect your vehicle may need an oil change, it's important to check the oil condition.
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items: clean cloth, disposable gloves, a funnel, and the dipstick.
Important: To avoid injury, wait until the engine is completely cool before checking the oil.
Follow these 4 steps:
1. Remove the dipstick
Wipe it clean with a cloth before taking the measurement.
2. Reinsert it and check the level
Pull it out again and observe the two marks at the end. The lower mark indicates the minimum level, and the upper mark indicates the maximum. The oil level should fall between the two.
3. Check the oil’s appearance
If oil looks very dark or contains debris, it's best to take your vehicle to your Honda Service Center for an oil change.
4. Add oil if necessary
If the level is low, use only the oil recommended by the manufacturer and a funnel to prevent spills. Add small amounts at a time and check the level frequently to avoid overfilling, as this can damage the engine.
